MA in International Security and Diplomacy (180 credits) 1 year full time and 2 years part-time

The MA in International Security and Diplomacy which is awarded by the University of East Anglia and  offered by the London Academy of Diplomacy , University of East Anglia - London Campus  will examine the various facets of the dynamics of International Security. It will explore the concepts of strategy, security and international security and the main debates in the field of study. It further examines the causes of international instability in the post-Cold War period, including the spread of terrorism and the threat of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, with a focus on political, military, economic, societal and environmental factors. It will also discuss the various factors which lead to the ‘Long War’ post 9/11 and the issue of reconciling universal values with national interests.
International security has extended to new areas of Human Security. This Course will cover market security (business); community security; food security and marine safety.

You will be required to attend the following compulsory modules:

  • International Security (20 credits)
  • Diplomacy: Theory & Practice (40 credits)
  • Research Methodology (10 credits)
  • Dissertation (50 credits)


and choose three optional modules (60 credits); at least two from the following and one from a range of modules offered by the Academy:

  • Intelligence Studies (20 credits)
  • Cultural Awareness (20 credits)
  • Public International Law (20 credits)
  • Strategic Defence Diplomacy (20 credits)
  • Media Communication Strategies (20 credits)
  • Science Technology and International Policy (20 credits)
  • Religion, Diplomacy and Security (20 credits)


Teaching Staff

The diplomacy programme will benefit from the experience and expertise of the Academy’s Director Professor Nabil Ayad and a team of academics, experts and professionals with a proven track record in running courses and training programmes for members of the London Diplomatic Corps, staff of overseas Ministries for Foreign Affairs and other government departments, and staff of multinational corporations as well as graduates aspiring to an international career.

Assessment

You will be assessed on coursework, oral presentation and written examination. You will also be required to submit a dissertation of about 12,000 words on an approved topic.

Research

The above courses will help you to develop independent investigation, reporting, conceptual analysis and research skills which are necessary requirements for those who wish to read for an MPhil and PhD degrees in the future.

Entry requirements

Normally, students must have either: a degree from a recognised UK or overseas institution, a postgraduate degree, or professional qualification in a relevant discipline, or knowledge and skills at a university degree standard, normally through five years’ relevant work experience.

Applicants should be fluent in written and spoken English to study at postgraduate level.

Applicants whose first language is not English, an attainment of at least IELTS 6.5 or its American equivalent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of 600, unless they meet one of the following criteria:

  • They have studied in English for at least one year.
  • They are members of the diplomatic staff who have been given prior courses in English to fit them to work in an English speaking environment.

INTO UEA London offers pre-sessional summer programmes if students need to improve their English before starting the course. Some may be required to attend an interview and pass a language test. Alternatively applicants may enroll on English for Postgraduate Study which is a year-round course of intensive academic English language study, which prepares international students (whose first language is not English) for study at postgraduate level. The course covers English language, academic study and subject specific postgraduate research skills – all that is needed for successful study at postgraduate level.
