King by Professor Riad Nourallah
"A new publication by Professor Riad Nourallah, LAD's Director of Research, is a long historical novel set in the turbulent era of the 6th century AD. Though a work of fiction, it is the product of years of research, and deals with conflicts between cultures and empires and faiths but also with groups and individuals who try to achieve reconciliation and peace between them. The elemental role of diplomacy is repeatedly highlighted. One memorable section reads:
As defined by Geber a true Ambassador is one who serves the cause of peace between two kings rather than the power of one over the other. As such his mission is loftier and more valuable than either sovereign. He may stroke the jewelled dagger in his belt as bidden by his master to impress his host. He may escort a chest of golden solidi to help win his host's favours or seal an agreement. But he should not allow Terror to inform his peace bid or Greed to dictate it. No flatterer must he be to his employer but an honest counsellor—a restraint to him who lusts after War and a spur to him who blushes before Peace. So Geber had said rather ornately. But he had also added that a true Ambassador may yet manoeuvre his king by making him believe in a greater glory as a maker of peace rather than as a captor of scorched fields and haunted castles.
King, a complex, provocative, and "contemporary" novel, is published this month by Quartet Books, London."
