The MA in International Communication and Diplomacy which is awarded by the University of East Anglia and offered by the London Academy of Diplomacy, University of East Anglia - London Campus is an important course. Global communication, international co-operation and the expansion of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have increased the need for effective bilingual communication by professionals who can offer more than linguistic competence in order to facilitate interactions between people who do not share the same language, culture and procedural practices.

This course provides theory-grounded as well as skill-based training in the fast growing field of international communication and liaison with a particular focus on perspectives of bilingual communication in a global context. Mediation, advocacy, conflict resolution and peace-building are some of the topics where theory is put into practice through simulation and role plays. The course combines the study and analysis of diplomacy and international affairs with the skills required to communicate information across cultures. This involves enhancing students' intercultural competence, information handling competence and ability to facilitate, represent and advocate between participants from countries worldwide.
The course also covers various aspects of international liaison and communication, ranging from techniques and strategies of bilingual communication to intervention and negotiation skills. It also examines the dynamics at play in bilingual interactions specific to political, military, economic, legal and social settings.
You will be required to attend the following compulsory modules:
- International Communication: Concepts and Strategies (20 credits)
- Diplomacy: Theory & Practice (40 credits)
- Research Methodology (10 credits)
- Dissertation (50 credits)
and choose three optional modules(60 credits); at least two from the following and one from a range of modules offered by the Academy:
- International Liaison (20 credits)
- Cultural Awareness (20 credits)
- Diplomatic Discourse and Liaison Interpreting (20 credits)
- Interpreting for the 21st Century (20 credits)
- Media Communication Strategies (20 credits)
- Religion, Diplomacy and Security (20 credits)
- Economic Diplomacy (20 credits)
In addition to English, students attending this course must be fluent in one of the following languages: French, Arabic, Spanish or Chinese. Other languages may be included subject to demand.
The course also involves a one week optional educational European field trip to visit international and regional organisations such as NATO, the European Union, the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court.
Teaching Staff
The diplomacy programme benefits from the experience and expertise of the Academy's Director Professor Nabil Ayad and a team of academics, experts and professionals with proven track records in running courses and training programmes for members of the London Diplomatic Corps, staff of overseas Ministries for Foreign Affairs and other government departments, and staff of multinational corporations as well as graduates aspiring to an international career.
Assessment
You will be assessed on coursework, oral presentation and written examination. You will also be required to submit a dissertation of about 12,000 words on an approved topic.
Research
The above courses will help you to develop independent investigation, reporting, conceptual analysis and research skills which are necessary requirements for those who wish to read for an MPhil and PhD degrees in the future.
Entry requirements
Normally, students must have either: a degree from a recognised UK or overseas institution, a postgraduate degree, or professional qualification in a relevant discipline, or knowledge and skills at a university degree standard, normally through five years' relevant work experience.
Applicants should be fluent in written and spoken English to study at postgraduate level.
For applicants whose first language is not English,attainment of at least IELTS 6.5 or its American equivalent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of 600 is required, unless they meet one of the following criteria:
- They have studied in English for at least one year.
- They are members of the diplomatic staff who have been given prior courses in English to qualify them to work in an English speaking environment.
INTO UEA London offers pre-sessional summer programmes if students need to improve their English before starting the course. Some may be required to attend an interview and pass a language test. Alternatively applicants may enrol on English for Postgraduate Study which is a year-round course of intensive academic English language study, which prepares international students (whose first language is not English) for study at postgraduate level. The course covers English language, academic study and subject specific postgraduate research skills – all that is needed for successful study at postgraduate level.
